The July 2019 issue of The Lobster Newsletter is now available! Starting on page 15 is an article I submitted about the technical work I am performing to validate the preservation of American lobster pleopods via freezing to allow for future molt staging. Molt status is commonly used to asses lobster "quality" in the fishery when selling to buyers, i.e. if a lobster is close to molting it may not survive transportation and would be considered “low quality”.

The ability to preserve pleopods would allow sampling without the need for immediate processing, and hence should increase general applicability and ease of use.

Starting this fall I will be continuing this work with an honours student who's project will centre around this topic. Stay tuned!
